GROUND PENETRATING RADAR (GPR)

Conventional ground penetrating radar will locate metallic and non-metallic lines provided that the soil conditions are suitable. The GPR unit is limited by the soil conditions at the site and the diameter of the utility lines or conduits. The GPR equipment sends continuous electromagnetic pulses through the earth or other structures, receives the reflected waves back from subsurface structures, and displays the results to construct a “picture above” of the subsurface structures. In some instances, GPR can be useful identifying potential targets even if the utility is not visible, for example identifying an underlying trench line.

ELECTROMAGNETIC (EM) LOCATING TECHNOLOGIES

The EM equipment consist of transmitter and receiver.  The transmitter applies a signal set to a specific frequency, to a utility line or any insulated metallic line.  The transmitted signal is picked up by the receiver, which is tuned to the same frequency.  This technology will locate all metallic lines, including electrical, gas, CATV, telephone, steel or ductile iron pipes.

ACAD UTILITY MAPPING

Utilities are often times hit mistakenly because of inaccurate maps and records of utilities in the vicinity.  More and more utilities are being placed underground adding to a spider’s web of new and old utility lines.  Excavation near or in these areas add to the risk of hitting these lines and bringing down vital services.  That is why locating utility lines completely and accurately is so important, providing a cost-effective way of doing business in this age of dependence on electricity, phone and other utilities.
